Electric or acoustic?
While many students are rocking out on electronic drum, I have to say, there's nothing quite like the sound of an acoustic kit. If you're looking for top-notch brands, I highly recommend Yamaha, Alesis, and Roland. Just a tip—steer clear of those budget Costco brands; they won't give you sound you deserve.
Drum sticks?
Almost any brand of 5A drumsticks will do the trick. Some popular favourites include Zyldjian, Pro-Mark, Vic Firth, Remo, and Pearl.
